Service 03The map pack and your reviews

Google Business Profile

For a local business the Google Business Profile often matters more than the website. It is what fills the map pack, the three results that appear above everything else when someone searches with local intent.

Categories and services

The primary category does more for ranking than any other single field, and most profiles pick it once and never revisit it. Services get listed explicitly rather than left for Google to infer from a website it may not have read.

A review habit, not a review campaign

Google says it plainly: more reviews and positive ratings can improve local ranking. What works is a repeatable ask at the moment a customer is happiest, plus a reply to every review including the bad ones.

The same details everywhere

Name, address, and phone identical across Google, Yelp, Facebook, and Apple Maps. Inconsistent listings split the signal and confuse the thing you are trying to convince.

Photos that are yours

Profiles with real, recent photos of the actual place get more clicks and direction requests than profiles carrying one exterior shot from four years ago.

Google Business Profile: common questions

Why is my competitor ranking above me with fewer reviews?

Review count is one input among several. Relevance matters too, which is how closely the profile and the site match what was typed. In one audit I ran, the top result had 117 reviews and the business one spot below had 336. Something other than review count put the first one on top.

Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?

Yes, and there is a guide on this site about exactly that. The short version: the profile is rented space you do not control, it cannot answer detailed questions, and Google uses your site to decide how relevant your profile is.

Should I reply to bad reviews?

Always, once, calmly, in public. The reply is not for the angry customer. It is for the next person reading, who is deciding whether you are the kind of business that takes responsibility.
